Laura and Max || Wedding

Laura and Max’s wedding day was cold and windy, yet entirely beautiful. Laura did a killer job on the styling and design for the day– our jaws were on the floor when we saw the way she decorated the beautiful space where she and Max had their wedding. Besides being aesthetically gorgeous, the whole day was filled with a lovely joy. Laura and Max are a perfectly adorable couple, and the day was filled with happy tears, thoughtful words (their vows were amazing), and a really great crew of people to celebrate with them. And oh, their wedding was in early May, which meant all the flowering trees were blooming and it was the most dreamy thing ever.

It is one of those mornings that you love, when the rain outside is light enough so that it is not unpleasant to walk through the streets without an umbrella, but heavy enough that it makes the entire day seem cozy and peaceful. It is your birthday today. Since I have met you I have loved your excitement for birthdays. Not just your own, but those of everyone around you. For you a birthday is the greatest occasion for celebration. It is a moment that reminds us that we are here and that here is beautiful. It is not just a day for reflection, but a day for dancing and singing and rejoicing at the marvel of being alive. I love this about you. And I love that it does not end when you open your eyes the day after your birthday, but continues each week, each month, throughout the year. I marvel at the youthful excitement that you bring to each day, never letting an ounce of it slip through your fingers. Your love for road trips and the unexpected moments of adventure that they bring. Your passion for meeting new people and learning about their stories and what inspires them. Your complete dedication to your friendships, no matter what plans are sacrificed in order to make some tasty food for a friend having a bad day. Your insistence that music is not only for enjoyment, but has the ability to heal. Your fondness for your Lake Michigan, the place you are best able to clear your head as you float and let her waves crash over you. Your dedication to finding meaning and purpose not only in life as a whole, but in each little moment. I have loved seeing you grow and change each year since we have met, never letting yourself stay stagnant. Most of all, I love the woman that you have become. Happy Birthday Mae.

It’s Wedding Season

We’re almost through the month of May, which means that we have been in the full-swing of wedding season for the last few weeks and enjoying every minute of it. The quiet months of January-April in Michigan are always a welcome break when they come, but as soon as May hits, we are ready to get ourselves back to the busy buzz of summer. The last few weeks have been filled with some gorgeous weddings (we can’t wait to share them with you!), incredible couples, and beautiful love stories. Get ready for summer, kids; this blog’s about to be filled with a hella lotta goodness.

Stephanie and Craig || Engaged

A couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to hang out with these lovelies in Detroit. We went to Belle Isle, which is where Stephanie and Craig went on one of their first dates. They have incredible chemistry– Craig can make Stephanie laugh on a dime (okay, the fact that she is ticklish helps), and the way they look at each other is pure gold. I loved running around Belle Isle with these two. We got yelled at by a few geese, dive bombed by seagulls, and spent the evening talking about travel and wedding plans. You know, just a regular old amazing time.

Liisa and Jeremy || Engaged

I got to hang out with Liisa and Jeremy a few months ago when they came to Grand Rapids for their engagement session. It was the beginning of winter, before the first snowfall. We spent a cloudy afternoon by the river, laughing and crunching leaves, pretending that it was warmer than it actually was. Can’t wait til their September wedding on the other side of the Mitten– it’s gonna be a real good one.

Danielle and Peter || Wedding

I recently had the opportunity to document Danielle and Peter’s wedding at Secret Jewel Celebrations Venue, a small, private beach near Playa del Carmen, Mexico. After spending the evening before their wedding getting to know their family and friends, I knew that I was in for something special. They were all incredibly genuine and warm-hearted people who made me feel that I was part of the family. Ilse, the incredible coordinator behind Diamant Events pulled everything together beautifully. I am so honored to have been able to spend the day with these wonderful people.

Last month I had the opportunity to travel to Mexico to shoot an incredible wedding, but more on that another time. While I was there I was able to do a little exploring and I brought along my new Fuji x-e1 and Fuji 35mm lens. All of these images were shot in JPEG with Fuji’s in-camera film simulation. This means NO post processing! Hallelujah. I am excited about the quality of the images and about the look of Fuji’s film simulation. This is definitely my new travel/walk around camera. The days of lugging an SLR around are OVER! For those of you who have a Fuji- most of these images were the provia simulation with the highlight tone at -2 and the shadow tone at -1. Thanks to my bud Michael for being my model in a bunch of these.

I had the opportunity this fall to spend some time tramping around rural South Dakota with Summer and Steven. We met Summer at her sister Sam’s wedding this past year, and I am truly honored to be a part of another celebration in their family come May.
